Teixeira has big day as Bucs make history against VMI

Redshirt freshman has goal, assist as Bucs set shutout streak record

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 24, 2023To say it was a gem of an afternoon for Ruby Teixeira is putting it lightly.

A goal and an assist for the redshirt freshman Teixeira lifted ETSU to a 2-0 win over VMI on Sunday. Teixeira assisted on a Reagan Fitzgerald goal in the 56th minute with a laser-precise cross, then scored her first collegiate goal from the penalty spot in the 79th minute to seal the result.

The Buccaneers (5-1-4, 1-0-1) shut out their fifth consecutive opponent by blanking the Keydets (1-10-0, 0-2-0), marking the most consecutive shutouts in program history and the first solo shutout of
Rhyan Connolly's
career. ETSU has not allowed a goal in 499 minutes, the longest shutout streak in program history.

ETSU had the better possession in the first half but couldn't break through. Their best chances came seconds apart, when
Kyra Ranvek
rifled a shot to the top-right corner that forced goalkeeper Jillian Hall to make an acrobatic save. Less than 20 seconds later, Annabelle Ekern headed down a corner kick on frame that Hall dove on to prevent a goal.

VMI nearly took the lead in the 51st minute when Madison Hornig hit the crossbar. The ring of the woodwork jolted all of Summers-Taylor Stadium awake, and the Bucs took the upper hand soon after.

When center back
Madison Hook saw Teixeira streaking down the right wing in space, she hit the freshman winger in stride with a long pass through the air. Teixeira worked the ball to the edge of the box and whipped in a low cross that Fitzgerald flicked into the back post for her fourth goal of the season and the fourth career assists for Teixeira and Hook.

Teixeira benefited from Fitzgerald yet again 23 minutes later when Fitzgerald collided with Emily Ward just inside the box resulting in a penalty kick for ETSU. Teixeira was called upon and tucked the spot kick inside the right post to put the Bucs out of reach for the Keydets.

The Bucs outshot the Keydets 15-5, with six shots on goal to just one by VMI. Teixeira, Ekern,
Ava MatherneMolly Cason
and Jenna Brown had two shots each.

With four points through the first weekend of SoCon play, ETSU is tied with Furman and UNCG atop the SoCon regular season standings. The Bucs host Chattanooga in a major SoCon clash Thursday at 6 p.m.
