GREENVILLE, S.C. (Sept. 21, 2023) – Ashton Blair (Knoxville, Tenn.) will remember the 21st night of September – a night she made history for herself and her team.
The redshirt sophomore goalkeeper recorded her fourth shutout of the year to give ETSU a 0-0 road draw at Furman. The result marks the first time ETSU has ever earned a point in Greenville, snapping a 10-game losing streak against the Paladins at Stone Stadium.
Ava Matherne (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) appeared to have broken through in the 16th minute but had done so from an offside position. Matherne broke free again behind the defense at the half-hour mark but was denied one-on-one by Addison Corn. A third chance for Matherne came in the 33rd minute, but the freshman came away empty-handed yet again after a daring sliding tackle by Miya Poplin. Blair was forced into a diving save at her right post in the 41st minute by a right-footed strike from Madison Luckett, and she caught the ensuing corner to end the last major threat of the first half.
Furman poured on the pressure after halftime, but Blair and the Bucs stood tall.
Shania Diaz threatened with a free kick that caromed off the crossbar. Norah Roller took a crack at goal in the 73rd minute, but a headed clearance inside the six-yard box by Taylor Limprevil (Spring Hill, Tenn.) denied her the breakthrough and kept the Bucs level with the Paladins. Blair made no other saves but was forced to deal with multiple corners and spoiled them all.
The Bucs were outshot 6-4, and Furman had eight corners to ETSU's three. Matherne led the Bucs with three shots and two shots on goal. Blair recorded two saves in her fourth solo shutout this season and the seventh of her career, tying her for the fifth-most in a season in school history and ranking as the fifth-most in a career.
ETSU looks to finish the first weekend of SoCon play with a win against VMI Sunday at 2 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
