ETSU lands 58 student-athletes on SoCon Spring All-Academic list

Two Bucs with perfect 4.0 GPAs; 19 Bucs with at least a 3.80 cumulative GPA

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 11, 2023) – The Southern Conference announced its 2023 Spring Academic All-Conference Team on Tuesday, and ETSU had 58 student-athletes placed on the list.

The sports of men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, rifle, wrestling, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball and softball are represented on the Spring Academic All-SoCon team.

To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average at the conclusion of the spring semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.

Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field combined for 27 selections – 14 for outdoor and 13 for indoor – while Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field combined for 10 student-athletes on the all-conference list.

ETSU men’s golf and women’s tennis each had five selections, while baseball and softball had three each on the list. Men’s tennis and women’s basketball each had two student-athletes receive the honor, while women’s golf had one earn the award.

The Bucs had two spring student-athletes finish with a perfect 4.0 GPA — women’s tennis graduate students Emilia Alfaro (Azul, Argentina) and Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico). Alfaro also accomplished a 4.0 GPA last year.

As a league, 475 student-athletes earned 595 spots on the Spring 2023 Academic All-Southern Conference Team. The 595 total selections are the third-highest total in conference history for the spring academic all-conference team.

The league’s 10 women’s outdoor track and field teams led the way with 99 academic all-conference selections, while the nine women’s indoor track and field programs combined for 84. The eight men’s outdoor track and field teams combined for 54 selections.
