Six Bucs named ITA Scholar Athletes
TEMPE, Ariz. (July 10, 2023) – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its 2023 Division I Women’s ITA All-Academic Teams and Scholar Athletes on Monday, as ETSU was well-represented on both lists.
The Bucs generated an impressive 3.93 GPA to lead all ETSU programs in the 2022-23 season. To be eligible for the ITA All-Academic Team award, all letterwinners on the team must combine for a 3.20 GPA or higher.
Six Buccaneers earned ITA Scholar Athlete status this season, maintaining at least a 3.5 GPA for the academic year. This list includes graduate students Mariya Shumeika (Minsk, Belarus), Emilia Alfaro (Azul, Argentina) and Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico), as well as senior Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan), redshirt-junior Maria Fernanda Carvajal (Queretaro, Mexico) and sophomore Ralitsa Alexandrova (Sofia, Bulgaria).
On top of six ITA Scholar Athletes, ETSU also celebrated a College Sports Communicators Academic All-American this offseason in Alfaro. The Azul, Argentina native posted a perfect 4.0 for the academic year along with Carvajal and Elizarraras.
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements:
- Have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year
- Be listed on the institutional eligibility form
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements:
- Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale),
- All student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and
- All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year
