Bucs cruise to 4-1 win over Wofford

Four Buccaneers score in largest win over Terriers since 2018

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 6, 2023) It was sweater weather, but the Buccaneers never let the Terriers see them sweat.

ETSU women's soccer topped Wofford 4-1 at Summers-Taylor Stadium on a crispy Sunday afternoon. Aliya Cooper scored her second goal of the year in the 19th minute, followed by tallies from Kinsten Evans in the 41st minute, Reagan Fitzgerald in the 60th minute and Sinoxolo Cesane in the 62nd minute to seal a rout. The win marks the largest margin of victory by either team in the series since ETSU's 7-1 win over Wofford in 2018.

With an aggressive mindset, the Buccaneers (8-2-4, 4-1-1) immediately asked questions of the Terriers' (4-9-2, 2-4-0) defense, with their wingers stretching the back line and creating space to attack. In the 19th minute, Taylor Limprevil made a lunging effort to keep the ball moving forward and hit Ruby Teixeira in stride. Teixeira broke free of Millie Murphy down the right wing and floated a cross to an unmarked Cooper eight yards from goal. Cooper buried a header in the back post to put the Bucs in front.

Near halftime, the Blue & Gold struck again from a similar area with Ava Matherne breaking free and floating a cross to the back post that held up long enough for Evans to streak past her defender for a tap-in goal, the first for Evans since September 8, 2022.

The Bucs struck fast and hard in the second half, with two goals 2:29 apart put the outcome beyond doubt.

Cesane played a crisp pass forward to Fitzgerald in stride, and the freshman kissed it off the right post for her fifth goal of the year. Moments later, Grace Eatz found Cesane in a nearly identical position, and Cesane slotted the ball inside the left post for her fifth of the year and seventh of her career.

Wofford scored in the 74th minute when Meara Kelly headed down a free kick into the path of Ashley Grant who pounded the ball into the right side of the netting for the first goal scored by a visiting team at Summers-Taylor Stadium in 2023.

In a busy affair in the box score, the Bucs outshot the Terriers 21-10 and outshot them on goal 10-5. The two teams combined for 27 fouls, and Wofford was issued two yellow cards in the last seven minutes.

Individually, Eatz and Cesane led the Bucs with five shots apiece. Cesane, Fitzgerald, and Cooper had two shots on goal each. Ashton Blair stopped four of five shots in collecting her 10th career win, the fifth Buccaneer goalkeeper to reach double-digit career victories.

The win puts the Bucs at 4-1-1 in SoCon play, tied with Samford for second in the SoCon and two points back of Western Carolina for the top spot. The Bucs play the Bulldogs and Catamounts in the final two games of the regular season.

Before they can turn their focus to the title fight, however, the Bucs play host to UNCG coming off a win on Thursday night at 6 p.m. Admission is free at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
