Eatz golazo lifts Bucs over UNCG

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 12, 2023) – Grace Eatz found a clear path to goal just before halftime and cleared ETSU's path to SoCon title contention.

The sophomore scored her third goal of the year off a free kick in the 44th minute to lift the Bucs a 1-0 victory over UNCG at Summers-Taylor Stadium. The victory is their fifth in six matches and keeps them apace of the other SoCon title contenders.

The Bucs (9-2-4, 5-1-1) pressed the issue the whole first half, piling up six shots against the Spartans (5-9-2, 2-4-1) and stressing them with wide play outside the box. That good play around the box produced the decisive moment in the match.

In the 44th minute, Emma Arnold got into space with the ball to the right of goal from 20 yards away and was hauled down by Parker Sikora. Eatz stood over the ball with Kyra Ranvek, and after Ranvek's dummy run, fired a missile of a shot destined for the back post for her third of the year and the fifth of her career.

Ashton Blair was tested at the hour mark when Claire Esse launched a right-footed shot from just outside the box, but the goalkeeper lunged to her left and parried it away for her only save of the night. UNCG mounted more threatening possession in the second half but never put another shot on frame as the Bucs held on for the win.

Blair collected her seventh shutout, tying the ETSU single season record set by Shu Ohba in 2021. The Bucs outshot the Spartans 7-4 and outshot them on goal 3-1. Reagan Fitzgerald and Ruby Teixeira had two shots each. The game was physical, with 29 fouls and five bookings.

Three points puts ETSU at 16, level with Samford and two back of Western Carolina. They go on the road for the final time against Samford on Sunday at 2 p.m. before hosting WCU seven days later.
