Bucs make statement with UNCG rout

ETSU scores second-most goals in a game ever in blowout of reigning SoCon champs

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct 6, 2023) - When the rain finally hit Summers-Taylor Stadium in earnest, the flood had already arrived.

ETSU routed reigning Southern Conference champion UNCG 6-0 in a landmark victory on Friday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium. The Buccaneers (4-5-3) scored the second-most goals in a game in program history, and the Spartans (1-8-3) conceded their most goals in a game since October 14, 2008. Five Buccaneers scored in the win, with Gabriel Ramos picking up a brace on a penalty and a run to the back post that caught his defender unaware.

The Bucs started on the front foot when Cam Carroll and Tarik Pannholzer hit the post seconds apart in the second minute. The next trip down the field, Kieran Richards found Pannholzer wide open on the left side, and he streaked in and chipped goalkeeper Jarrett Payne to become the fifth Buccaneer to reach 20 goals in a career.

Pannholzer broke free again up the right side in the ninth minute and was clear in with a chance at goal only to be met by Payne well outside the box. The keeper lunged for the ball, missed, and sent Pannholzer flying, leading to the second red card by UNCG in ten minutes of game time dating back to last Saturday at Furman.

With a goal on the board and their opponent down a man, the Bucs sensed opportunity and took it.

Henrik Guenther found space on the right wing and floated a cross into the box for Richards, who slipped between two defenders and flicked an uncontested header into the back post for his 20th career goal, joining Pannholzer as the sixth player in school history to reach the mark.

Chris McKenna got in on the act in the 23rd minute, scoring his third goal of the year off another uncontested header at the near post after a quality service from Richards and Ramos, and ETSU had the game in hand at halftime.

Richards was hit in the head by UNCG backup goalkeeper William Garinger in the 54th minute going for a contested ball at the top of the six-yard box, and Ramos converted the penalty kick with a hard strike into the top right corner of the net for his third goal of the year.

Ramos added another when Carroll steered a ball with his left foot back behind him from the right side. Ramos made a break for it and streaked through an unaware defense for his second of the night.

Louie Salkeld completed the scoring in the 78th minute, when a right-side cross from Axel Boden split two defenders and found the freshman in a perfect position at the near post to put a header on frame behind him.

In total, Ramos had two goals and one assist while Richards had a goal and two assists, and McKenna had one of each. The Bucs dominated the shot count, 22-6, and outshot the Spartans 10-6 on goal. Cole Hunter stopped four shots for his third shutout of the year and 10th of his career, becoming the fourth Buccaneer goalkeeper to reach 10 shutouts in a career.

Ramos broke a tie for the eighth-most assists in ETSU history with his ninth career helper on McKenna's goal. Richards collected his 11th and 12th career assists, moving him into a tie for fourth in ETSU history. Richards and Pannholzer are now tied with Aaron Schoenfeld for the fourth-most goals in school history with 20 apiece. Richards is fourth in ETSU history in points with 52, Pannholzer is sixth with 49 and Ramos is 11th with 27.

The Bucs step out of conference play on Tuesday night when ETSU heads to Boiling Springs, N.C. to face Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m.
