Ramos strikes again in win at Gardner-Webb

Senior's third goal in two games has Bucs unbeaten in last three
?
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (Oct. 10, 2023) After winning Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, Gabriel Ramos got an early start on a repeat performance.

The Brazilian senior linked up with Cameron Carroll for the second time in as many games and scored his third goal in that span to lift ETSU to a 1-0 win at Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, giving the Bucs a season-long three-game unbeaten streak.

The Buccaneers (5-5-2) found all they needed to win the match just 11 minutes in. Carroll slipped past his defender on the left wing and found Ramos unmarked at the top of the six-yard box. Ramos steered Carroll's delivery into the net with ease to put the Bucs in front of the Runnin' Bulldogs (2-6-3).

Ramos had a chance at a quick brace in the 17th minute after some great work on the wings by Yves Tcheuyap and Tarik Pannholzer left him with a point-blank chance, but Alan Johnson scrambled and made a tough save along the ground.

Breno Correia registered GWU's only shot on goal in the 22nd minute. Correia stepped in front of a pass and broke toward the box driving a low shot from the right side that Cole Hunter dove on to neutralize the threat. Pannholzer immediately followed with chance after Kieran Richards intercepted a pass 20 yards from the Runnin' Bulldog goal.

The second half started with considerable GWU possession but no worthwhile chances at goal. At the hour mark, the Bucs regained the initiative.

In the 66th minute, Pannholzer and Louie Salkeld were stymied on successive tight-angle shots after Pannholzer slipped through the defense. Pannholzer found Richards in the 80th minute with a decent look in the box, but Richards fired over the crossbar.

The Runnin' Bulldogs had a final surge that began in the 83rd minute when Clement Scaccia saw daylight through traffic but missed inches wide of the right post. Despite putting the entire team in the attacking half of the field, Gardner-Webb never broke down a resolute ETSU defense in their search for another chance to equalize.

The Bucs outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs 13-8 and held them to just one shot on goal with the three-man back line of Tcheuyap, Chris McKenna, and Nico Kross playing all 90 minutes in front of Hunter who collected his fourth shutout of the year and 11th of his career. Five Buccaneers recorded multiple shots on goal, and Ramos led the Bucs with two shots on goal.

Ramos' goal was his 10th career marker, making him the 10th Buccaneer to reach double-digit career goals and tying him with Alesi Osorio for ninth on the all-time goals list. The goal also lifts him to 29 career points, tying him with Itode Fubara for ninth in program history.

The Bucs go back on the road to Lexington, Virginia, to visit VMI on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
