Bucs Outlast Chattanooga in Five Sets

CHATTANOOGA,  Tenn. (Oct. 27, 2023) – The ETSU volleyball team picked up its second straight win on Friday as it knocked off rival Chattanooga in five sets (21-25, 25-15, 25-22, 19-25, 18-16).

Stat Standouts – There were several Buccaneers that had standout statistical nights on Friday. Amanda Lowe set a new career-high with 20 kills to pace the Buccaneer offense, while Jenna Forster (15 kills) and Brianna Cantrell (13 kills) also finished the night with double-digit kill totals. Jasmal Cruz paced the defense with 18 digs in her return to the lineup. Malgorzata Andersohn (35 assists and 17 digs), Alex Kreutzmann (28 assists and 15 digs) and Cantrell (13 kills and 16 digs) all picked up double-doubles. Lundyn Coffman also had a stellar night on the block with two solo blocks and five block assists.

Set 1 – ETSU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on the Mocs. Credit Chattanooga, however, as it clawed back and eventually tied the score at 18. The score was tied again at 19 and 20. With the scoreboard reading 20-20, the Mocs reeled off a 5-1 run to finish out the first set, 25-21.

Set 2 – The Buccaneers got off to another good start in the second scoring four of the first five points. ETSU this time, however, kept the pressure on the Mocs and did not relinquish the lead. A five-point ETSU advantage, 20-15, suddenly grew to a 10-point lead by the end of the set, 25-15.

Set 3 – ETSU relied on a balanced offensive attack in the third. Forster, Cantrell, Lowe and Whitley Rammel all totaled three kills. Even with the Bucs spreading out its offense, Chattanooga was in the set until the end until ETSU capped the win, 25-22, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Set 4 – The Buccaneers and Mocs were locked in a battle in the fourth. No lead grew larger than three points for most of the frame. A 4-1 run by Chattanooga suddenly grew the lead to six points, 20-14. The six-point deficit proved too large for the Bucs to overcome as the Mocs pushed the match to a fifth set, 25-19.

Set 5 – The match-deciding set was the most competitive of the night. In the shortened fifth set, nine different points were tied scores. ETSU had the Mocs on the ropes with four different match points. The Buccaneers finally closed out the match with an ace from Kanon Miyaki, 18-16.

Next Up – ETSU, now 4-18 overall and 4-7 in SoCon play, will aim for its third victory in a row on Saturday when it visits UNC Greensboro. First serve between the Buccaneers and Spartans is set for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
