Bucs Down UNCG in Five Sets to Push Winning Streak to Three

GREENSBORO, N.C. (Oct. 28, 2023) – The ETSU volleyball team picked up its third straight win on Saturday as it downed UNC Greensboro in five sets (19-25, 25-13, 18-25, 25-14, 15-10). With Saturday's win, the Buccaneers boost their overall record to 5-18 overall and 5-7 in SoCon play.

Stat Standouts – Amanda Lowe continued to play well for the Buccaneers as she totaled a team-high 15 kills in the victory. Jenna Forster played well offensively (14 kills, .344 attack percentage) and defensively (two solo blocks, four block assists), while the tandem of Brianna Cantrell (13 kills, 12 digs) and Malgorzata Andersohn (34 assists, 17 digs) both tallied double-doubles. Jasmal Cruz added 14 digs to help the Buc defense and added season-high four aces.

Set 1 – UNCG came out ready to play on Saturday as it attacked the ETSU defense at a .394 clip with 16 kills in the opening frame. The hot-hitting Spartan offense proved too much for the Buccaneers to slow down as UNCG went on to take the first set, 25-19.

Set 2 – It was ETSU's turn to get its offense clicking in the second. Cantrell led the way with five kills but Forster, Lowe, Andersohn and Abbey Thomas each had two kills or more to power ETSU to a much-improved performance. A 4-0 Buccaneer run turned an 11-11 score to 15-11 before a 6-0 spurt of points by ETSU put the set out of reach for the Spartans, 25-13.

Set 3 – The momentum again swung UNCG's way in the third. A kill from Lowe made the score 11-9 UNCG. However, the Spartans went on to score 11 of the next 13 points to seize control of the stanza and regained the lead in the match, 25-18.

Set 4 – Facing a four-set defeat, the Buccaneers bounced back in the fourth. ETSU was very efficient offensively with 11 kills on 24 attempts with just two errors in the frame. Lowe and Cantrell both had four kills, while Forster added three. The trio of offensive options for ETSU proved difficult for UNCG to handle and ETSU would force a fifth set, 25-14.

Set 5 – Neither team performed up to its performances in the previous sets as both squads hit below .060 in the final frame. The difference in the match-deciding set proved to be on the service line. ETSU was able to maintain the serve better than UNCG as the Spartans committed five costly service errors. Those five points proved to be the difference in a 15-10 win for the Bucs.

Next Up – ETSU will close out its regular season home schedule next weekend when it welcomes Samford and Mercer to Brooks Gym next Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both matches are scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m.
