Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Goals keep flowing as Bucs top VMI

Hunter posts fourth straight shutout in 3-0 win
?
LEXINGTON, Va. (Oct 14, 2023) – In the first 10 games of 2023, ETSU scored eight goals, but once the dam broke, it completely collapsed.

ETSU men's soccer topped VMI 3-0 on Saturday at Patchin Field in Lexington, Virginia. Sebastian Reventlow-Mourier and Tarik Pannholzer scored exactly 60 seconds apart in the first 12 minutes, and Zayd Idlibi added his first career goal in the second half to put an exclamation point on a crucial road win. The Bucs have now scored 10 times in the last three matches.

The Buccaneers (6-5-2, 2-0-1) were aggressive from the opening kickoff, stretching the Keydets (4-10-0, 0-3-0) all over the field in the first 10 minutes but going without a shot.

That changed dramatically in the 12th minute.

A cross from Pannholzer on the right wing was headed away from goal by Adam Senna. The ball found Reventlow-Mourier all alone at the edge of the box, and he drilled a half-volley that curled inside the left post for his sixth career goal and first since September 2, 2022.

Exactly one minute of game time later, the match was settled as a contest when a strong run by Yves Tcheuyap ended in a pass to put Pannhozler one-on-one with Senna on the left wing. Pannholzer got around Senna, but a desperate challenge from Conor McGovern hauled him down in the box for a penalty. Pannholzer took the spot kick himself and struck it softly to the right as Zack Murphy dove the opposite way for his third goal of the year and 21st of his career, tied for third-most in ETSU history.

The Bucs added one more spectacular goal to the tally in the 71st minute, when Pannholzer found Idlibi with a corner kick for a header that was knocked away from goal by a header from McGovern. Not to be denied, Idlibi executed a perfect bicycle kick from 10 yards out for his first collegiate goal.

The Bucs were outshot by VMI 17-8, but both teams had five shots on goal. Cole Hunter stopped all five shots on frame for his SoCon-leading fifth shutout of the season and 12th of his career, tying him with Josh Perryman for third most in school history. A streak of four consecutive shutouts matches the longest such run in ETSU's history when the Bucs shut out Kentucky, Winthrop, Memphis, and UAB on September 9-15, 2013.

ETSU returns home for Senior Night on Tuesday against Winthrop. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium. Admission is free.
