Seniors shine in win over Winthrop

Two seniors score and grad student keeper stops penalty to lift Bucs

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct 17, 2023) When big moments arrived on Senior Night, the players honored before kickoff rose to the moment.

Gabriel Ramos and Tarik Pannholzer scored, and Cole Hunter turned away a penalty in the 20th minute to power ETSU to a 2-1 win over Winthrop on Tuesday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

The Buccaneers (7-5-2) got off to a flying start when Sebastian Reventlow-Mourier found Ramos on an arcing run through the middle. He fired a long ball forward, and Ramos gathered it in line with the Eagles (4-7-2) back line. He fired a soft left-footed shot into the back post over Winthrop goalkeeper Vicente Villazon Rettig for his 11th career goal, ninth-most in ETSU history.

Jack Perry hauled McGee down in the box in the 20th minute, giving McGee a chance at a penalty. He drove it low and left, and Hunter read it well and made a diving save to keep the Bucs in front.

Pannholzer was relentless in search of goal all night, and it finally paid off in the 85th minute. A long, searching ball from Henrik Guenther found Pannholzer behind the defense. He pulled Villazon out to the right edge of the box and found just enough daylight to slide it around the keeper and into the open net. The goal was Pannholzer's 22nd career tally, third-most in ETSU history.

Winthrop scored just over a minute later, when Bryan Marshall gathered his own rebound off a corner and slid it inside the left post for his second goal of the year, ending ETSU's shutout streak at 469:59, the second-longest streak in program history.

The Buccaneers outshot the Eagles 14-11 and shots on goal were even at seven. Pannholzer led the Bucs with six shots, and Ramos had three shots, all on goal. Hunter had six saves on seven shots.

The Bucs travel to Furman on Saturday with first place in the Southern Conference on the line. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. in Greenville.
