JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 10, 2026) - ETSU's home field advantage had become so robust that it was almost worth calling their home field "Fort Summer Taylor," but App State needed just eight minutes to breach its walls on Thursday.
The ETSU women's soccer team saw its 11-game home unbeaten streak end with a 2-0 defeat to App State on Thursday night. The streak dated back to a 2-2 draw with Samford on October 20, 2024.
The Mountaineers (5-1-2) cranked up their press immediately and asked questions of the Buccaneers (3-3-0) back line early, but it was talisman striker Libby Bermingham who made the decisive move. She picked off a pass and raced behind her defender, firing a shot parried away on the near post by Addison Yelton. The rebound fell cleanly into the path of Olivia Simon, who rifled a left-footed shot across the goal from the recovering Yelton to extend her point streak to four games.
App State added again in the 18th when an errant pass caused by their press created a long throw-in opportunity in the attacking third. Hayden Petrick's long throw was headed toward goal, but it was a failed clearing attempt that set up Ellie Garrison to put her whole leg behind a left foot strike that powered through Yelton's hands into the side netting.
The Bucs were outshot 11-5 and 3-2 in shots on goal, with six of App State's shots coming in the first 18 minutes. Caroline Wawak led the Bucs with two registered shots.
ETSU concludes non-conference play at Radford on Sunday at 7 p.m.
