No. 68 ETSU starts the SoCon Tournament on Thursday against The Citadel

Bucs look to keep things rolling into the postseason

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (April 15, 2026) – Fresh off winning the Southern Conference (SoCon) Regular Season Championship, the No. 68 ETSU men's tennis team will look to keep its momentum rolling on Thursday as it begins play at the SoCon Men's Tennis Tournament against The Citadel. First serve between the top-seeded Buccaneers and the No. 8 seed Bulldogs is set for 1 p.m. from the Champions Club in Chattanooga.

ETSU enters the postseason as one of the hottest teams in the nation. The Bucs have won a Division I-best 19 matches in a row dating all the way back to January 11 when they dropped a match then-No. 1 Wake Forest. Oscar Martinez and Martin Vergara have led the charge for ETSU this spring in both singles and doubles. Martinez is 18-1 this spring playing the No. 1 singles spot for the Bucs, while Vergara isn't far behind with a 14-6 record playing primarily the No. 2 spot in ETSU's singles lineup. In doubles, Martinez and Vergara came in at No. 85 in the ITA's latest National Doubles Rankings.

The Citadel will come to the Scenic City with a 5-26 overall record. The Bulldogs dropped their final six matches of the regular season, including a 6-1 loss to the Bucs on April 7. Ted Bagwell has the most wins this season for The Citadel with 10 victories in singles and nine more in doubles.

Since the SoCon switched the tournament from an individual to team format for 1998, the Bucs have dominated the event. ETSU is 44-5 in the SoCon Tournament since that switch with 10 Tournament Championships going to the Bucs. Should the Bucs win three matches in three days in Chattanooga, it'll be their 14th Tournament Championship as members of the SoCon.
