Women's basketball upsets conference leader Chattanooga, 91-90, in double overtime

Daniela Lopez reached a career-high 28 points en route to her 500th career point

Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - East Tennessee State women's basketball (13-12, 6-4 SoCon) upended the league-leading Chattanooga Mocs (16-7, 8-2 SoCon) at Chattanooga on Saturday afternoon in a double overtime contest, topping the in-state rival 91-90 for the highest scoring contest of the season for ETSU.

NOTABLES
  • ETSU is now 1-1 versus Chattanooga in multiple overtime games.  The Mocs defeated the Bucs in 2020, 91-82, in triple overtime and the Bucs returned the favor with today's 91-90 double overtime victory.
  • Daniela Lopez reached her 500th career point with her first made three of the game, continuing on to secure a career outing with a career-high 28 points.  The junior guard totaled 28 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal through 45 minutes of action for the individual single-game high in minutes.  Lopez registered the game-winning shot with :01 remaining from an in-bounded pass via graduate guard Anala Nelson.  Lopez also tallied the made three that sent the game to double overtime to give the Bucs a shot at victory.  Lopez went 10-15 from the field and 4-5 from behind the arc.  In the overtime periods, Lopez combined the two for 10 points, reaching her new career-high in the first overtime.
  • Meghan Downing accumulated her third double-double of the season, posting 13 points and 13 rebounds.  Downing led defense with nine defensive rebounds and three blocks, contributing heartily to the offense with two assists and six made field goals.  The senior forwards three blocks were crucial as her final block of the outing kept Chattanooga from scoring and secured the second overtime bid just after the game-tying shot from Lopez.  Downing has reached double-digit points in six games and double-digit rebounds in eight appearances through the 2025-26 season.  
  • Anala Nelson was a hefty contributor as the second-highest scoring member of the squad, totaling 18 points vastly from her eight made free throws, tacking on three rebounds, one block and an ETSU career-high of seven assists.  The seven assists is an individual single-game high from the squad this season. Nelson played a key role in the victory, making the in-bound pass for the game-winning layup as well as recording six points and three assists in the overtime periods.
  • Carmen Richardson, the sophomore guard, was the fourth member of the squad to reach double-digits scoring, tallying 10 points after going 5-11 from the field with two rebounds, four assists and two steals, extending her assists streak to four games and her steals streak to three.
  • Sophomore guard Jaidyn Harper was a key playmaker for the Bucs, totaled seven points, two rebounds and three assists, making multiple shots in overtime to lift ETSU past Chattanooga.
  • Lucy Hood, the sophomore guard, pumped out two made three and one steal, reaching nine outings this season with multiple made threes.
  • The team totaled a season-high 91 points, 32 rebounds, season-high 18 assists, six blocks and four steals.  ETSU shot 50% from the field and 35% from behind the arc.  
  • ETSU is now 4-3 all-time in multiple overtime games, notably 2-2 against Southern Conference foes and on a two-game win streak for multiple overtimes.  The squad is now 1-1 in overtime games in the 2025-26 schedule.
