JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sep. 16, 2025) - Gabriel Betancourt is leading from the front.
After picking up his first collegiate point against Radford last week, the ETSU men's soccer captain scored in the 61st minute to pull ETSU level with UNC Asheville for a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
The best early chance for the Buccaneers (0-4-2) came in the 21st minute when Jaime Carrillo made a well-timed run down the left wing to get on the end of a long pass from Betancourt, but Carrillo was denied by Bulldogs' (4-1-1) goalkeeper Lucca Barros.
42nd minute, a loose ball floating around in the box and Albert Montragull lunged to block a shot. Montragull landed awkwardly and picked up an injury in the effort, and the ball fell to an open Lennart Graznow on the right side of the box to score on a low, hard drive to the back post and put UNC Asheville in front as the game moved to halftime.
The Bucs found their answer just past the hour mark.
Berkay Duman linked up with Noah Franks down the right side into the box. Franks cut in from the end line and drifted a cross through the box that was deflected to the top of the area and right to the feet of Betancourt. The captain hit a low line drive that bounced short of Barros and past his right side to pull ETSU level.
In the 85th minute, the Bucs began their final charge. Khalifah Atolagbe found Noah Franks on a run down the right side to break in one-on-one with Barros, but the 'keeper turned his shot away. A free kick opportunity for Morgan Marvik was blocked out high shortly after, and an Atolagbe free kick aimed for a header at the back post was spoiled by a leaping Barros.
The Bucs outshot the Bulldogs 10-5 and 3-2 in shots on goal. Betancourt led ETSU with three shots on goal, and Carrillo had two.
The Bucs will take another week between games before visiting Presbyterian next Tuesday.
