Bucs Smash Highlanders for Fourth Straight Win

Fitzgerald scores twice in frenetic second half; Cooper, Commerford open 2025 accounts

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sep. 11, 2025) - In the blink of an eye, a game that had been searching for energy was overflowing with it, and the Bucs turned weeks of momentum into a barrage.

The ETSU women's soccer team scored four times in eight minutes in the second half to rout Radford 4-2 on Thursday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium. Reagan Fitzgerald added to her SoCon-leading goals tally with a brace, while Jada Cooper and Sadie Commerford both scored for the first time in 2025 to give ETSU its fourth consecutive victory. Fitzgerald scored twice, while Cooper had a goal and two assists and Commerford had a goal and an assist.

The teams traded quality chances in the first quarter of an hour. The Buccaneers (5-2-2) had a great look in the sixth minute when Fitzgerald got free in a crevice of space between two defenders but skied a shot over the bar. The Highlanders (3-3-1) had an excellent chance in the 15th minute when a misfired clearance landed right in the stride of Ava Kertgate, who launched a clean strike on goal from 15 yards out but missed wide right. Chances were scarce afterward as buildup for both teams petered out well away from goal, and the teams ended the first half with the same score that started it.

In the 53rd minute, Fitzgerald extended her blistering run of form.

A long ball over the top put Cooper in immense space two-on-two alongside Fitzgerald. She floated a ball into the box from the left wing in a difficult area for goalkeeper Lexi Radvanyi to judge. Fitzgerald timed her run perfectly to reach the ball just before she collided with Radvanyi to feather it into the back post for her sixth goal this season, 13th of her career, and her fourth consecutive game with a goal.

The second goal didn't need to wait nearly as long – just 29 seconds.

Caroline Wawak found Commerford in stride in transition. Commerford fired from the right side, and Radvanyi parried her shot right to a lurking Cooper who pounced on it for her first goal of her sophomore year and the third of her college career.

Caitlyn Nottingham scored in the 55th minute to put Radford on the board, but the Bucs were not done and mounted an answer five minutes later.

Cooper and Fitzgerald wove together more great interplay just before the hour mark. A Grace Eatz pass set Fitzgerald free down the right side, and she threaded a pass to Cooper who had inside leverage on her defender. Cooper turned a pushed a through ball back to Fitzgerald who took one touch before slotting the ball into the back post for her second goal of the night and second collegiate brace.

The onslaught continued when Sadie Commerford got space from 25 yards out and drilled a curling strike that spun well out of the goalkeeper's reach for her first collegiate goal. The two teams combined for five goals in eight minutes of game time, and ETSU was in command. Hailey Crellin scored in the 88th minute for Radford to cut into the deficit, but the outcome had long since been decided.

This is ETSU's first four-game winning streak since September 21-October 1, 2018, and their first four-game run against all-Division I opponents since October 21-November 4, 2016. It is the eighth winning streak of four or more games in program history and the first of Jay Yelton's tenure as head coach.

The Bucs' win over the Highlanders concludes the non-conference portion of their schedule. They open SoCon play next Thursday, September 18, at The Citadel at 4:00pm in Charleston.
