Bays leads Bucs versus Gamecocks

ETSU falls in three at USC

COLUMBIA, S.C. - East Tennessee State women's volleyball opened the 2025 campaign at South Carolina in the Gamecock Classic on Friday evening.  The Bucs (0-1, 0-0 SoCon) fell to the Gamecocks (1-0, 0-0 SEC) in three sets.

Notables
  • Makayla Bays, the sophomore outside hitter, led the offense with nine kills on a .348 clip.  Bays totaled 10.5 points on the night with her nine kill, singular ace and singular block assist, while posting a perfect percentage on serve-receive with 16 flawless receptions.
  • Sophomore setter Alex Kreutzmann tallied the team-high of 13 assists, and added two digs on the night.
  • Melanie Morris boasted a flawless serve-receive average, taking a total of 17 perfect receptions.  The junior libero also collected seven digs, the team-high in the match, and one ace.
  • Gianna Blair, the redshirt sophomore middle blocker, led defense at the net with two block assists for the team-high against the Gamecocks.
  • Four Bucs dished aces over the SEC-foe.  Morris and Bays were joined by senior outside hitter Brianna Cantrell and freshman setter Bailey Gohlke to put up the team's total of four.
  • Bailey Gohlke made a strong debut, collecting 11 assists and five digs to pair with her ace.
  • Gohlke, Sophia Davis, Kari Wilson, Zeynep Ozer and Malia Brinkman made their blue and gold debuts in the match.
  • ETSU totaled 29 kills, 27 assists, four aces, 28 digs and four block assists in the three-set match.
UP NEXT
The Bucs are back in action on Saturday, August 30 for day two of the Gamecock Classic.  ETSU will face Campbell at 11 a.m. and Clemson at 7 p.m.
