LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 24, 2025) - The ETSU women's soccer team fell 2-0 to Eastern Kentucky on Sunday at the Lexington Sports Club.
The Colonels (3-1-0) scored twice in a flash in the final 20 minutes, with Peyton Smith scoring in the aftermath of a free kick and Caroline Atwill drilling a shot just inside the box to stagger the Buccaneers (1-2-1).
ETSU had the lion's share of possession and pressure early. Ruby Teixeira had a chance in the 8th minute with space down the right side but was closed out aggressively by Jordan LeVasseur. Reagan Fitzgerald had a crack at goal from just inside the box but was stopped by the keeper going low to her right in the 12th, and Grace Eatz forced LeVasseur to make a save on a direct free kick moments later.
Taryn Childers had the best opportunity for the Buccaneers at the half hour mark when Abbey Hayberg found her in stride with an incisive pass, and Childers forced LeVasseur into a difficult save at point-blank range. Hayberg forced another save out of LeVasseur in the 33rd, but the Bucs couldn't break through, and the teams remained as they started at halftime.
The Colonels got their breakthrough in the 71st minute when a free kick nearly 50 yards from the goal deflected off the head of an ETSU defender and right to the feet of Smith, who lifted her right boot and steered the ball over and around Addison Yelton, who had come out to cut down the angle.
In the 73rd, Atwill put the game out of reach when she ripped a blistering shot with her right foot that slipped through the hands of a leaping Yelton into the goal.
The Bucs outshot the Colonels 15-12, and both teams finished with seven shots on goal. Fitzgerald and Ava Duffey led the Bucs with three shots each, and Teixeira was the only Buccaneer to get multiple shots on frame. The game was physical with 26 combined fouls and seven cards issued.
ETSU is back on the road Thursday against Tennessee Tech for the third matchup between the two teams in the last five seasons.
