CLINTON, S.C. (Feb. 15, 2025) – East Tennessee State University softball didn't let a rain delay get in the way of an opportunity for a win, defeating Maine 3-1 on Saturday morning and afternoon.
Sophomore
Gabrielle Fowler started in the circle for the Bucs and allowed one run to Maine in the first inning. That was all the Black Bears would muster, however, as Fowler and junior
Taylor Suchy combined to splice three hits over the next six innings of work.
The ETSU lineup went down in order through the first three innings before junior outfielder
Brylee Mesusan reached on a walk to lead off the fourth inning. Senior infielder
Riley Nayadley singled and senior infielder
Cameron Young induced a fielder's choice. A wild pitch allowed Young and Nayadley to advance to second and third, respectively, before a sac fly from Muir tied the game at 1-1.
The rain followed soon after, with the delay officially starting in the top of the fifth. Two hours and 27 minutes later, the teams retook the diamond. Suchy went to the circle with runners on first and second and promptly got three straight outs to end the fifth inning.
Mesusan reached again to open the bottom of the sixth with an infield single. Nayadley then advanced her all the way to third with a sac bunt. With the go-ahead run 60 feet away, Young drove a single through the left side to give ETSU the lead.
Muir reached on a fielders choice that gave Maine the second out of the inning, but advanced to second on a wild pitch. Suchy gave herself an insurance run by singling Muir in, and the Bucs went to the seventh up 3-1.
Suchy got a pair of outs in the seventh before an error allowed a runner to reach. However, she induced a flyout to right field for the final out of the game to give ETSU its third win of the young season.
The Pinnacle PC Invitational will conclude on Sunday. The Buccaneers' initially scheduled 4:30 Saturday game with Presbyterian has been postponed to Sunday, and ETSU has added another game against Maine. The updated, weather-dependent schedule has the Bucs facing off with Maine at 12 p.m. on Feb. 16, followed by the ETSU-Presbyterian contest at 1:30 p.m.
