GREENVILLE, S.C. (Nov. 7, 2025) - The ETSU men's soccer team's 2025 season came to an end in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Wofford Terriers at Stone Stadium on Friday night.
After absorbing pressure for most of the first half, the Buccaneers (2-9-4) got on the board first in the 38th minute. Jaime Carrillo forced a save out of Terriers (6-10-2) goalkeeper Pepe Hinterschuster creating a corner kick. Wofford failed to clear the ball beyond Cruz, who struck a rising shot that pinged off the head of defender Nick Dyer and fluttered inside the left post for Cruz's third year.
ETSU kept Wofford at bay for nearly the entire second half, but the Terriers scored in a flash late.
In the 88th minute, a cross on the end of a long run by outside back Jakob Andersson was steered from inside the box to just outside the area by Nathan Simes for Stuart Patnaud who drove the ball low and hard through traffic and snuck it inside the left post to equalize and force overtime.
The Terriers had the better of the first OT period, and Nathan Simes rang a shot off the crossbar in the 98th that let Emil Holmberg recover to knock it away. A shot by Declan Mettee seconds later was blocked by a lunging Ryan Suckling to keep the score tied after the first session.
In the second overtime, a long ball over the top found Simes in stride. Holmberg stopped his shot, but the rebound caromed high into the air and fell to the feet of Mattee, who pushed a half-volley into the net in the 104th minute that put Wofford over the top.
The Terriers advance to play top-seeded Furman on their home field on Sunday.
