GREENVILLE, S.C. (Jan. 30, 2025) – East Tennessee State University women's basketball earned its first conference road win in emphatic fashion with a 72-62 victory over Furman on Thursday.
The 72 points the Buccaneers tallied were the most by the Blue & Gold away from Brooks Gym all season, surpassing the 61 ETSU posted on Nov. 15 in a loss to Lipscomb. Free throw shooting, which has been an Achilles heel of ETSU for swaths of the season, was the opposite in Greenville. The Bucs shot 22-27 from the line, season bests in both makes and attempts.
Four Bucs scored in double digits, led by a career high 23 from redshirt junior guard
Paige Lyons on 7-12 from the field and 9-11 from the free throw line. 5th year guard
Courtney Moore added 17 and a career high three blocks, freshman guard
Carmen Richardson scored 13 in her best game in SoCon play, and 5th year forward
Isabella Hunt contributed 12 on a season high 20 minutes played.
The game started out with plenty of defense from both sides. Furman extended a five point lead before junior forward
Meghan Downing and Lyons combined to tie the game on back-to-back possessions to end the quarter at a 12-12 tie.
The Paladins kept the Bucs from hitting many shots from the field in the second, but ETSU successfully got to the free throw line time and again to stay within striking distance. Hunt, senior guard
Braylyn Milton and Lyons went 6-for-6 in the final 2:03 from the charity stripe, and Hunt hit a putback layup with seconds left to pull ETSU within one, 27-28, at halftime.
The Buccaneer offense began picking up steam in the third, as Richardson and Moore got hot simultaneously, scoring seven and six, respectively, as the Bucs took the lead heading to the fourth.
Lyons and Moore took over the game in the final frame. The duo combined for all of ETSU's 17 in the first 5:06 of the fourth, blitzing past defenders for open layups and hitting free throws. Moore also knocked down the Bucs' first triple of the evening (Milton would hit one more later in the fourth). The guard pair finished with 22 of the Buccaneers 27 points in the quarter, their most in a quarter on the road all season, and ETSU won 72-62.
Mock Brown improved to 4-1 against Furman at ETSU with the win. Next, the Bucs wrap up their road swing at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Wofford.
