ETSU throttles Mercer for first SoCon win

Bucs score 22 points off turnovers in rout

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 16, 2025) East Tennessee State University women's basketball thrashed Mercer, 70-46, on Thursday.

ETSU (10-8, 1-2 SoCon) scored 22 points off of 17 forced turnovers, while committing a season-low seven fouls. The Bucs also got a deep showing from the bench, outsourcing the Bears 26-4 in bench points. The Blue & Gold also held Mercer (6-11, 1-1 SoCon) to a season-low four attempts from the free throw line, the only time the Bears have shot single-digit free throws this season.

Senior guard Braylyn Milton led the Buccaneers with 14 points on 4-for-5 shooting from 3-point range, six rebounds and four assists. 5th year guard Courtney Moore scored 13 and redshirt junior guard Paige Lyons added ten.

Junior forward Meghan Downing started the Bucs off with a deep midrange jumper 14 seconds into the game. After Mercer tied the game, Milton hit her first three of the night, ETSU led for the rest of the night – 39:26 in total. Senior guard Kendall Folley, Moore and Milton pioneered a 7-0 run and ETSU led 18-14 at the end of the first quarter.  

The Bucs scorched the nets from behind the arc in the first half, shooting 5-for-8 from 3-point range. Milton, Moore and Lyons all hit triples in the quarter, and an 8-0 run kept the lead at 34-27 heading into the halftime break.

ETSU's defense clamped down in the third quarter, holding Mercer to six points on 2-for-9 shooting from the field in the frame, and no points in the last five minutes of the quarter. The offense continued humming, going on 8-0 and 10-0 runs en route to a comfortable 52-33 lead.

The defense continued smothering the Bears, allowing just one made field goal in the first half of the fourth quarter as ETSU stretched its lead to as much as 27 points. With the game in hand, the Blue & Gold turned to the bench to close out the victory. Freshman guard Kaylee Carson scored five in her first SoCon action, including the Bucs' last 3-pointer (8-for-19) of the night.

Next, ETSU stays at home against Samford (5-13, 0-2 SoCon) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18.
