Bucs open SoCon play with a 6-0 victory over The Citadel

ETSU nets its most goals of the season to begin conference action

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 19, 2024) – Playing its first home match in over three weeks, the ETSU women's soccer team scored a season-high six goals in a 6-0 win over The Citadel on Thursday night from Summers-Taylor Stadium. With the victory, the Bucs improve to 2-4-1 overall and 1-0-0 in SoCon play.

The six-goal outburst by the Bucs was their highest in a match since September 17, 2023, at South Carolina State when they also scored six times. It also marked ETSU's most goals in a SoCon match since September 23, 2018, when it scored seven in a 7-1 win over Wofford. Five different Bucs tallied goals in the contest, including Johnson City native Megan Burleson who scored her first collegiate goal in the victory.

ETSU honored its seven seniors prior to Thursday's match with the Bulldogs. One of those seniors, goalkeeper Ashton Blair, picked up her 13th shutout of her collegiate career to go with a pair of saves. Those 13 career clean sheets tie the program record with former ETSU netminder Jasmine Elliott (2013-16)

Another one of ETSU's senior leaders Kyra Ranvek tallied one of ETSU's six goals in the 24th minute and then she added an assist on the Bucs' last goal of the night from Grace Eatz in the 81st minute.

Natalie Capannelli got the scoring started for ETSU as she was fouled in the box a little over two minutes into the matchup incurring a penalty shot. Capannelli did not miss as she gave ETSU the 1-0 lead. Ranvek's shot would find the back of the net next before The Citadel would accidentally knock the ball into their own goal in the 28th minute.

With a 3-0 lead after 45 minutes of action, the Bucs continued the offensive pressure in the second half. Ella Parker would set up Burleson's goal in the 57th minute to push the Buccaneer lead to four. Ruby Teixeira and Eatz would both add their second goals of the season in the 66th and 81st minute, respectively to wrap up all the scoring plays for the Buccaneers. Reagan Fitzgerald would tally an assist on Teixeira's goal as well.

The Bucs will return to the pitch on Sunday when they travel to take on UNC Greensboro. The start time for Sunday's clash between ETSU and UNCG is set for 2 p.m. from Greensboro.
