SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Aug. 25, 2024) – Sooner or later streaks will eventually end.

ETSU entered the match 4-0-4 all-time against USC Upstate, but the Spartans got a goal in the 18th minute and extend their lead in the 54th to secure the victory.

With the loss, ETSU – who was coming off a 3-1 win over Longwood on Thursday night – moved to 1-1-0 on the season. USC Upstate rebounded from a 3-0 setback at UNCG to improve to 1-1-0.

The Bucs were out-shot by four in the match, 16-12, while ETSU held the upper-hand in corner kicks, 6-1 – five of which came in the final 45 minutes. In a match that saw 12 total fouls, there were five bookings – three coming against the Blue & Gold.

USC Upstate set the tempo out of the gates early as they accounted for five of the first six shots in the opening 14 minutes with two of those forcing Marc Kouadio to make saves. The Spartans finally broke through four minutes later when Dario Stadler found Adrian Panaite near the six-yard box and he threaded one through the left post, giving USC Upstate the 1-0 advantage.

The Bucs put two shots on target in the opening half, but Cooper Jennings saved an attempt by Gabriel Betancourt in the 28th minute and stopped one from Lucas Nordin in the 42nd minute.

Panaite continued giving ETSU problems in the second half as he fed a pass to Shayne Abrams right inside the six-yard box to set up the open goal en route to extending the Spartan lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute.

Despite the Bucs outshooting the Spartans 7-4 and holding a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks in the second half, ETSU couldn't string together any scoring opportunities.
