Short-handed Bucs fall in doubleheader at Appalachian State

Muir blasts fifth home run of the season in game two

BOONE, N.C. (April 30, 2024) – Playing its final non-conference games of the season, the ETSU softball team fell in a doubleheader to Appalachian State on Tuesday at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.

Without the services of several starters due to the Bucs taking final exams, ETSU dropped game one 7-0 and fell in game two, 11-4.

In game one, the Mountaineers struck for three runs in the first and added two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the seven-run victory. Emily Musco, Maddison Stowell, Kennedy Payne and Leilani Coleman-Tillman registered the four hits for the Blue & Gold.

Kendall Thackston, Sunday's winning pitcher, suffered the loss (2-6) after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts (four walks) in four innings of work. Johnson City native Sejal Neas earned the win (10-14) after tossing a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Sara Muir – who got her first at-bats on Tuesday since March 5 – blasted a two-run home run to left field, but it wasn't enough to lift the Bucs past the Mountaineers. Muir connected on her team-leading fifth home run of the season in the top of the sixth, while an RBI double by Maddison Stowell and a run-scoring single by Cameron Lauretta got the Blue & Gold on the board in the fourth.

App State jumped out to an early lead thanks to plating five runs in the bottom of the third and answered ETSU's two-run sixth with three of its own in the bottom half to finish off the 11-4 victory.

Muir reached base twice as she also worked a walk in the fourth inning and scored two runs.

Gabby Fowler got the start and suffered the loss (0-3) after allowing five runs on five hits with four walks in three innings. Delani Buckner earned the win (3-7) after recording a complete game effort and totaled eight strikeouts.

The Bucs wrap up regular season play this weekend as ETSU heads to South Carolina for a three-game Southern Conference series at Furman, beginning on Saturday with a doubleheader.
