JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 27, 2024) – With the ETSU softball team looking to send its three seniors out with a pair of wins on Saturday, Wofford had other plans as the Terriers blanked the Bucs in a doubleheader at Betty Basler Field.
Wofford won game one 1-0 on a home run by pinch hitter Hope Ingle in the top of the seventh, while the Terriers scored six times in the top of the eighth to secure a 6-0 victory in the nightcap.
With the setbacks, ETSU – who was without three starters – dropped to 10-33 overall and 4-13 in SoCon play. Meanwhile, Wofford – in its inaugural season – improved to 19-20 overall and 9-8 in league play.
In game one, the Bucs outhit Wofford, 4-3, with
Brylee Mesusan,
Riley Nayadley,
Tiare Rieger and
Faith Adams all registering a hit. ETSU threatened in the third as they had the bases loaded but couldn't scratch across any runs, while in the fifth the Bucs had their first two hitters reach but were again held scoreless.
Whitley Arnott, one of the three seniors recognized in the pregame Senior Day ceremony, pitched a gem in the opener but suffered the loss. Arnott (4-5) allowed the one run on three hits with three strikeouts on two walks in seven innings of work. Wofford's Margaret Axelson improved to 7-5 after tossing a four-hit shutout.
In game two, both teams were held scoreless for the first seven innings, but in extras, Wofford scored its six runs to complete the sweep.
Sara Muir (4-7) got the start in the circle and allowed two runs on six hits with three strikeouts (two walks) in 7.1 innings. Gabby Fowler tossed the final two-thirds of an inning where she allowed four runs on four hits with three walks.
Abby Greenwood (7-13) pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts to earn the win.
The series finale is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Betty Basler Field.
