HILTON HEAD, S.C. (April 16, 2024) – The ETSU women's golf team captured its second Southern Conference Championship in the past four years on Tuesday at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C. The Bucs shot a 2-over-par 290 in Tuesday's final round to finish off a wire-to-wire victory. It is ETSU's fifth conference championship overall and second as members of the SoCon.
ETSU's three round score 879 marked the third-best tournament score in the history of the SoCon Championship trailing only Furman's scores of 858 in 2015 and 875 in 2016. It is also the Bucs' second win at the Moss Creek Golf Club this year as they also took home the team title at the Low Country Intercollegiate in March.
The top individual finish for the Bucs came from
Sophie Bert. Bert, who was tied for the lead following the second round, shot an even-par 72 on the final day and finished two strokes behind Furman's Anna Morgan for the individual title.
Brianna Castaldi carded the lowest score on the day for ETSU checking in at 2-under 70 to help the Bucs clinch the title.
Grace Chin also finished tied for six with a three-day total of 221. It is the second time that the Bucs had three golfers finish among the top seven with the other being 2021.
Alex Crafton trimmed four shots off her score from round two to finish tied for 15
th with a final stroke tally of 228.
Amber Thornton placed 20
th after closing the tournament with a 4-over 76 to bring her total to 230. Thornton also claimed the SoCon Pinnacle Award, which goes to the student-athlete with the highest GPA on the championship-winning team.
By winning the conference, ETSU clinched an automatic berth to the NCAA regionals with its championship win. The field will be announced live on Wednesday, April 24, at 2 p.m. on the Golf Channel.
