ETSU downs Wofford in defensive duel, 57-50

Bucs make it three straight wins in SoCon play for first time since 2021
  
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 7, 2024) – The ETSU men's basketball team is built around defense, toughness and togetherness. 
 
The mantra showed up again with the Bucs getting revenge as they downed Wofford in a defensive duel, 57-50 on Wednesday night inside Freedom Hall. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • ETSU locked in defensively for the third straight game as the Bucs held Wofford to 35 percent shooting (17-48) and 27 percent from beyond the arc (6-22). 
  • Shooting 30 percent from the field (16-53) and 24 percent from three-point range (7-29), the Bucs got it done at the free throw line. ETSU shot 86 percent at the charity stripe (18-21), including going 6-of-8 in the final 33 seconds. Wofford went 10-of-16 at the line and missed three of its last four in the final minute and thirty-two seconds. Kyler Filewich missed two foul shots with 1:32 remaining and Wofford trailing 51-49, which sent the Buccaneer faithful home with free Chick-fil-a. 
  • ETSU was plus-8 on the glass as the Bucs out-rebounded Wofford, 38-30, and were plus-10 in second-chance points, 18-8. ETSU had 18 offensive rebounds to the Terriers' eight. 
  • The Bucs, who lead the SoCon in blocked shots, swatted 10 tonight, resulting in the third time this season ETSU has totaled double-digit blocks. 
  • ETSU held the largest lead of the game at 38-30, while Wofford led by five (9-4) at the 12:10 mark of the first half. The game featured five ties and two lead changes. 
  • The Bucs have now won six straight home games in the month of February dating back to last season, while ETSU made it three consecutive Southern Conference victories – marking the first time the Blue & Gold have accomplished that feat since 2021. 
  • With the win, ETSU improved to 13-11 overall and 5-6 in league play, while Wofford dropped to 13-11 overall and 6-5 in conference action. 
TOP PERFORMERS 
  • Karon Boyd stuffed the stat sheet as he totaled 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Boyd also went 8-of-10 at the free throw line. 
  • Jaden Seymour led all scorers with 15 points, while adding five rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Seymour went 5-of-5 at the charity stripe.
  • Ebby Asamoah was the final Buc to hit double figures with 13 points and netted three triples. 
  • Jadyn Parker finished with five points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Parker moved into a tie for sixth with Greg Dennis among single-season Buccaneer shot block leaders with 53. 
  • Tyler Rice accounted for all six of ETSU's bench points as he sank two threes, while grabbing four rebounds. 
  • Corey Tripp led Wofford with 13 points. 
GAME SUMMARY 
The game was gritty and not pretty as the score was 2-2 five minutes in and the Bucs led 26-22 at the half. 
 
This marked the third straight game ETSU held an opponent under 30 first-half points as Wofford missed 14 shots in the opening 20 minutes. 
 
The defense carried over into the second half as the Terriers missed 17 more shots, including nine from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes. 
 
The Bucs were able to open an eight-point lead at 38-30 with 12:51 remaining, but ETSU couldn't push the advantage into double figures. 
 
Wofford used a 14-6 run over the next seven minutes to pull even at 44 when Jackson Sivills netted a triple with 6:08 showing on the clock. 
 
From there, the stretch run was a grind but ETSU never let Wofford take the lead.
 
The Bucs went back ahead by four thanks to a triple by Asamoah, making it 49-45 with 4:31 left to play, but again, the Terriers attacked. Wofford scored the next four points to pull even at 49, but a pair of free throws by Seymour gave ETSU the lead for good at 51-49. 
 
The Bucs held Wofford to one point over the final 3:27 and ETSU closed the game on an 8-1 run to secure the split in the regular season series.
