JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 17, 2024) – Taking on league-leading Chattanooga on Saturday afternoon inside Brooks Gym, the ETSU women's basketball team suffered a 56-41 setback to the Mocs.
The game featured a defensive battle as neither squad shot over 35 percent from the field, but it was a late second quarter run that carried over into the third, which propelled the Mocs to their 10th straight Southern Conference victory.
The Bucs were held to 29 percent shooting (13-45) and went 2-of-8 from beyond the arc, while Chattanooga shot 33 percent (18-54) and finished 4-of-11 from long distance. ETSU ended the game shooting 87 percent at the free throw line (13-15) and the Mocs hit at an 89 percent clip (16-18).
The Mocs outrebounded the Bucs by six, 39-33, and were plus-seven in second-chance points, 11-4. Chattanooga also finished plus-14 in the paint, 26-12, and was plus-13 in points off turnovers, 18-5.
With the loss, ETSU moved to 16-9 overall and 5-5 in league play, while Chattanooga swept the regular season series and improved to 22-3, 10-0.
The game started out tight as ETSU led 8-7 after the opening quarter, but with things tied at 19-19 with 3:55 remaining before halftime, Chattanooga ended on a 9-1 run to take an eight-point lead into the break, 28-20.
The Mocs carried momentum into the second half as they started the third quarter on a 9-2 run and extended their lead to 15, 37-22, with 3:11 left in the stanza.
ETSU continued to battle and chipped away at the deficit as the Bucs pulled within eight, 47-39, following a pair of free throws by
Jaileyah Cotton with 3:06 left in the contest. Cotton then forced a turnover following the free throws, but ETSU couldn't convert and inch any closer. The Mocs finished the game scoring nine of the final 11 points to come away with the 15-point victory.
Breanne Beatty led the Bucs with nine points before fouling out with 2:21 remaining and ETSU trailing 49-41.
Chattanooga was led by Jada Guinn's double-double effort as she finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds.
The Bucs continue their home stand on Thursday night when ETSU hosts UNCG at 7 p.m. inside Brooks Gym.
