MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (Dec. 6, 2024) – East Tennessee State University women's basketball fell 85-40 at No. 15 West Virginia on Friday.
ETSU was led by senior guard
Braylyn Milton, who finished with nine points. Junior forward
Meghan Downing added four blocks.
The Mountaineers opened with a scalding start, hitting five of their first six shots to take a 13-2 lead into the first media timeout, and finished with an 18-0 run. The Bucs settled in after that, with 3-point makes from Milton and Hood to cut into the WVU lead and trail 23-10 after the first quarter.
West Virginia's defense turned up the intensity in the second quarter. After senior guard
Kendall Folley hit a layup to open the frame, WVU allowed just four more points for the Bucs in the quarter while its offense continued to hum. The Mountaineers shot 8-for-16 from 3-point range in the half while forcing 22 ETSU turnovers.
Senior guard
Courtney Moore hit an early 3-pointer in the third quarter, but the Bucs went on a six minute scoring drought after her make, letting the Mountaineers further extend their lead. Milton hit a pair of baskets near the end of the quarter to finish with nine. At the end of the third, West Virginia led 65-24.
The Bucs mustered their best offense of the game in the fourth, scoring 16 behind four from freshman guard
Jaidyn Harper, with five other Bucs scoring in the quarter. West Virginia played its bench for the latter half of the fourth, with all but two Mountaineers scoring in the game, and WVU won 85-40.
Next, ETSU returns home at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8 to face UVA-Wise.
