JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 23, 2024) – East Tennessee State University women's basketball defeated Tennessee Tech 53-48 on Saturday to snap a two-game skid.
Senior guard
Braylyn Milton led the Bucs with 20 points on 4-for-8 shooting from behind the arc. Senior guard
Courtney Moore added ten for ETSU.
The Golden Eagles got out to a quick start with a 6-0 run over the first three minutes of the game. The Bucs offense warmed up, though, slowly chipping away behind seven first quarter points from Milton. The Charlotte, N.C., native hit a layup with eight seconds left in the quarter to give the Blue & Gold its first lead of the game at 15-14.
Moore hit an early 3-pointer to open the second quarter, but Peyton Carter dominated the rest of the frame, scoring 11 with three made triples, and Tennessee Tech took a 27-21 lead into halftime.
Milton took the game back over for the Bucs in the third, scoring ETSU's first ten points of the quarter. The Bucs ramped up the defensive intensity, forcing eight turnovers on Tennessee Tech's first nine possessions of the half, and ten in the quarter. The Blue & Gold mostly kept the ball out of Carter's hands, only allowing one shot from the Golden Eagles' leading scorer in the quarter.
Tennessee Tech took a 38-36 lead into the fourth quarter, which redshirt junior guard
Paige Lyons erased with a 3-pointer at the start of the frame. The Golden Eagles got back to the free throw line, hitting five of six, and Carter drilled a 3-pointer, but the deep shot from Carter was the only field goal TTU mustered in the first nine minutes of the quarter.
Trailing by two after Carter's 3-pointer, Milton responded again with a make from behind the arc of her own that gave her 20 points on the afternoon, the second 20-point game of her career, trailing only a 28-point performance against Louisville in November 2022. Her make gave ETSU a 47-46 lead.
On the next possession, senior guard
Kendall Folley got around the corner and to the rim for a layup to give the Bucs a 49-46 lead with a minute and a half to play. From there, four free throws for the Blue & Gold iced the contest, and ETSU got the 53-48 win.
Next, ETSU hosts Presbyterian at 7 p.m. on Thanksgiving Eve (Nov. 27) at Brooks Gym.
