ETSU swept by Chattanooga

Bucs fall in road rivalry match

Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Oct 17, 2024) – East Tennessee State University volleyball was swept by Chattanooga (21-25, 23-25, 11-25) in Chattanooga on Thursday.

Junior outside hitter Brianna Cantrell led the Bucs (10-8, 2-4 SoCon) with 12 kills. Freshman outside hitter Makayla Bays added eight kills in her first career start, and junior middle blocker Whitley Rammel had eight.

The Mocs (11-9, 2-4 SoCon) took the first set 25-21. UTC jumped out to a 5-0 lead before an ETSU timeout led to a run to square the match. Cantrell had six of her kills in the opening frame, including two of the Bucs' first three points. The two teams played close to a 15-15 tie. Then, Chattanooga took the lead and maintained it to win the set 25-21, as five Mocs recorded multiple kills in the set.

ETSU responded to take an early lead in the second set, forcing a Chattanooga timeout with the score 10-3. The Bucs stretched the lead to as much as eight before the Mocs slowly rallied to tie the set at 23. Chattanooga took the final two points to win the set 25-23.

Chattanooga took hold of the momentum won from its second set rally to decisively take the final set. Elaine Redman served a 7-0 run from a 6-6 tie to take a lead that the Mocs would not relinquish, and UTC took the set and match 25-11.

Next, ETSU returns home to face Western Carolina at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19. For more information on Buccaneer volleyball, follow @ETSUVolleyball on X (Twitter) and Instagram, and visit ETSUBucs.com.
