JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 13, 2024) – Looking to build upon its momentum from Thursday's win at Wofford and string together back-to-back victories for the first time this season, the ETSU women's soccer team suffered 1-0 loss to Furman on Sunday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
Despite taking three more shots and having more quality looks than Furman, the Bucs were shutout for the sixth time this season. After both teams played a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Furman netted the eventual game-winner on Nieva Gaither's third goal of the season in the 53rd minute.
The Blue & Gold had chances during the entire match; however, Reese DeJong registered six saves and came away with her third clean sheet of the campaign.
Grace Eatz led the Bucs as she recorded five of their 14 shots, while two of them were on target, including a strong look in the 80th minute. Following that attempt,
Natalie Capannelli followed up with another tester a minute later. Unfortunately, DeJong was in the right place at the right time for both looks and came away with her fifth and sixth saves of the match.
With the loss, ETSU dropped to 3-7-2 overall and 2-3-1 in SoCon play. Furman, who continued to have the Bucs' number, improved to 7-4-3, 3-0-2, while the Paladins moved their unbeaten streak to nine consecutive games.
The Bucs return to action Thursday night when ETSU takes on reigning SoCon champion Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
