ETSU volleyball concludes play at NKU Invitational

Bucs swept by No. 14 Ohio State on Sunday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (Aug. 27, 2023) – The ETSU volleyball team concluded play at the NKU Invitational on Sunday morning as the Buccaneers were swept by No. 14 Ohio State inside Regents Hall.

Amanda Lowe (Blacksburg, Va.) and Brianna Cantrell (Appleton, Wis.) led the Buccaneer attack as they combined for 14 of their 24 kills. Lowe finished with a team-high eight kills and added three digs, and Cantrell posted six kills. Newcomers Enisilina Savelio (Henderson, Nev.) and Malgorzata Andersohn (Bydgoszcz, Poland) both finished with 11 assists, resulting in the Bucs' 22 for the match.

Overall, ETSU was out-hit .467 (43-8-75) to .078 (24-18-77), while the Buckeyes were plus-3 in service aces (7-4) and plus-8 in digs (30-22). Both teams totaled five blocks.

With the setback, the Bucs dropped to 0-3 following the first weekend of tournament play and Ohio State moved to 3-0.

Ohio State led start to finish in the opening set as they went on to capture a 25-15 victory, while the second set was tight early on before the Buckeyes used a 6-0 run midway through to open a seven-point lead at 12-5. From there, Ohio State finished the set with a 12-point win, 25-13. ETSU battled in the third set as they jumped out to a 9-6 lead and went ahead 12-10 following kills by Whitley Rammel (Ft. Recovery, Ohio) and Lowe. Unfortunately, Ohio State rattled off five straight points to regain a three-point advantage and finished off the sweep with the 25-19 third-set win.

The Buckeyes had four players hit over .500 and Emily Londot registered a match-high 12 kills en route to hitting .524. Mia Tuman and Kamiah Gibson quarterbacked the offense as they accounted for 40 of the Buckeyes' 43 assists.

ETSU returns to action next weekend as the Bucs head to Cookeville for Golden Eagle Invitational at Tennessee Tech University. The Bucs open up with tournament host Tennessee Teck Friday at 11:30 a.m. ET.
