Cesane scores equalizer in 49th minute
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 24, 2023) – The ETSU women's soccer team put together a valiant effort on Thursday night against No. 25 Tennessee. Sinoxolo Cesane (Capetown, South Africa) netted the equalizer in the 49th minute, but the Vols went ahead for good with a little bit of bad luck from the Blue & Gold in the 62nd to escape with a 3-1 victory in front of 1,152 fans inside Regal Stadium.
Cesane's goal marked the third of her career, while it was just the fourth time the Bucs netted a goal against Tennessee in eight career games versus the Vols. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Ashton Blair (Knoxville, Tenn.) made the trip back to her hometown and stopped a career-high 10 shots.
Overall, Tennessee finished with 27 shots (12 on goal), compared to seven by the Bucs (three on target). The teams combined for 18 fouls with the Vols committing 11, while ETSU had two corners to Tennessee's 10.
With the setback, ETSU moved to 1-1-1 through its first three matches, while Tennessee remained unbeaten as they improved to 3-0-0.
The opening 15 minutes were scoreless but Tennessee jumped ahead to a 1-0 lead on the first of two goals from Kameron Simmonds in the 20th minute. Blair and the Bucs kept the Vols off the board in the final 25 minutes of the half as the Buccaneer keeper made two saves during that stretch.
Following an opening 45 minutes where the Vols were plus-15 in shots, 17-2, the Bucs never wavered and finally tied the score up thanks to Cesane's first goal of the campaign in the 49th minute of the match.
Unfortunately, an own goal by the Bucs gave Tennessee the advantage, which they never relinquished and Simmonds added her second of the night in the 72nd minute to limit a Buccaneer comeback.
Cesane led the Bucs with three shots on the night, while Lindsey Cook (Greeneville, Tenn.), Ruby Teixeira (Nashville, Tenn.), Reagan Fitzgerald (Oviedo, Fla.) and Rachel Reid (Maryville, Tenn.) all posted single shots.
The Bucs continue their three-game road swing on Sunday when ETSU heads to North Carolina to take on Gardner-Webb. The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
