JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Dec. 17, 2023) – The ETSU women's basketball team notched its fifth straight win on Sunday as it downed Campbell by a score of 54-39 at Brooks Gym. With Sunday's victory, the Buccaneers improve to 9-3 on the 2023-24 season, which was their same record through 12 games last season.
ETSU was led on Sunday by
Nevaeh Brown, who had a team-high 18 points. Brown, who netted a career-high 23 points in Thursday's win over UNC Asheville, has now paced the Bucs in scoring on four occasions this season.
Kendall Folley added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Breanne Beatty nearly notched a double-double with seven points and eight rebounds on the day as well.
There was really no separation between the Bucs and Camels through the first 10 minutes as no lead was more than one possession.
Courtney Moore got a jump shot to go with 1:21 remaining in the first quarter to give ETSU a 9-7 lead. Campbell answered with a make of its own about a minute later and the two teams were tied, 9-9, after one quarter of play.
The Buccaneers started to separate in the second quarter. Brown, who was held to two points in the first, led the charge with nine in the second. Brown drained a 3-pointer midway through the stanza to cap a 12-0 run by the Bucs and give them a 10-point lead, 21-11. Campbell chipped away at the Buccaneer lead a bit in the final five minutes before halftime. ETSU still held the edge on the scoreboard at half though, 23-16.
After both teams had trouble finding rhythm offensively in the first two quarters, Campbell and ETSU combined for 31 points in the third. Campbell nearly matched its point total from the first half in the third quarter (15 points) but Buccaneer lead still grew heading to the final quarter, 39-31.
ETSU wasted little time to extend its lead back to double digits in the fourth quarter. The Bucs knocked down five of six attempts from the free throw line to help build their lead to a game-high 19 points with a little under two minutes to go. The Buccaneers went on to finish off the win, 54-39. ETSU remains unbeaten against Campbell in Johnson City (8-0) and improves to 14-1 all-time against the Camels. Furthermore, ETSU is now 5-1 at home this season.
The Buccaneer defense showed up again on Sunday. ETSU held the Camels to single digit scoring totals in three of the four quarters and to 39 points for the game. The 39 points allowed was the team's second-lowest total in a game this season (35 vs. Norfolk State).
ETSU's next game will take place at Freedom Hall on Wednesday. Wednesday's game, which will be against Gardner-Webb, will be a part of a doubleheader with the Buccaneer men's basketball team. The women's game will tip-off at 5 p.m. with the men's contest against UMKC to follow at 7:30 p.m.
