Bucs travel to Elon for road opener on Thursday night

ELON, N.C. (Nov. 8, 2023) – Coming off a 17-point win over King in the season opener on Monday night, the ETSU men's basketball team hits the road for the first time this season when the Buccaneers travel to North Carolina to take on Elon Thursday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Schar Center.

ABOUT THE BUCS
  • ETSU is coming off a 73-56 win over King on Monday night inside Freedom Hall 
  • Seven different Bucs scored at least six points in the game, including newcomer Quimari Peterson netting a game-high 15 points 
  • Defensively, ETSU held the Tornado to 29.4 percent shooting and 3-of-19 from beyond the arc 
  • The Bucs blocked 10 shots, marking the most since swatting 11 against Furman on Feb. 25, 2018
  • The 10 blocks are currently tied for the most nationally with UConn, Auburn, Purdue, Chattanooga, Quinnipiac, and Western Illinois 
  • Brooks Savage became the 14th Buccaneer head coach to win his ETSU debut … The other Buccaneer coaches to win their debut include: Vernon McFee, Jim Luck, John Robinson, Gene McMurray, L.T.   • Jaden Seymour notched his fifth career double-double as he posted 11 points, career-high 14 rebounds and four assists … Seymour ranks 11th nationally with his 14 rebounds and is eighth with 11 defensive rebounds … The Charlotte native is also just one of five players in the early season to post at least 11 points, 14 rebounds and four assists in a game 
  • The Bucs knocked down seven three-pointers on Monday, extending their streak to 1,125 straight games with a triple … Newcomer Ebby Asamoah led the Bucs with four made threes 
  • ETSU improved to 62-41 all-time in season openers and have won 39 of their last 43 home openers 
  • The 2023-24 Buccaneer roster features 15 players ... ETSU's roster consists of one graduate player, two redshirt juniors, four juniors, one redshirt sophomore, three sophomores and four freshmen … Three players hail from North Carolina and Indiana, and one each from Tennessee, Iowa, West Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Kentucky, Virginia and Maryland
  • The Bucs return four players from last year's roster who logged minutes, including starters Jaden Seymour and Allen Strothers, along with Justice Smith and Braden Ilic … Overall, ETSU only returns 29 percent of its scoring, 37 percent of its rebounding and 38 percent of its minutes played in 2022-23 … Seymour totaled 253 points, 218 rebounds and 1,793 minutes, Smith posted 237 points, 111 rebounds and 683 minutes, while Allen Strothers recorded 109 points, 51 rebounds and 776 minutes and Braden Ilic added for 46 points, 33 rebounds and 199 minutes
  • After losing three starters and eight players from last year's team, head coach Brooks Savage and his staff brought in 11 new guys for the 2023-24 season … Seven of the Bucs are transfers – Ebby Asamoah (Delaware), Karon Boyd (USC Aiken), DJ Hughes (Butler), Jadyn Parker (North Florida), Quimari Peterson (John A. Logan), Tyler Rice (William & Mary) and Timmy Fasehun (Gulf Coast State College) … Four Bucs are true freshmen – Maki Johnson (Huntington Prep), Gabe Sisk (Ballard HS), Jaxson Jones (The Skill Factory) and David Meriwether (Lawrence North HS)
  • ETSU will have at least three games on national television this season … When the Bucs travel to Indianapolis to take on Butler on Monday, Nov. 13, the game will be televised on CBS Sports Network … ETSU's second game on CBSSN will be on Feb. 10 when the Bucs host reigning conference champion Furman … The Bucs' home game with in-state rival Chattanooga on Sunday, Jan. 21 will also be broadcast live on ESPN2 or ESPNU … Meanwhile, the four SoCon quarterfinal games will also be carried on Nexstar on March 4, while the two semifinal games on March 5 will be broadcast either on ESPN2/ESPNU and the championship game on March will be carried on ESPN 
ABOUT ELON
  • Elon is coming off a 101-78 loss at Wake Forest on Monday night 
  • Elon led by as many as 21 points against the Demon Deacons and led 55-43 at the half … However, the Phoenix were outscored 58-23 in the final 20 minutes as Wake Forest rallied for the 23-point win 
  • Zac Irvin led Elon with 17 points as he was 6-of-9 from the field and 4-for-6 from long distance 
  • Elon made 10 threes in the contest and shot 44 percent from beyond the arc 
  • Sophomore guard Max Mackinnon was named to the 2023-24 All-CAA preseason second team … Mackinnon, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year, averaged 11.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game last season for the Phoenix
  • Elon was picked to finish 10th in the CAA Preseason Poll 
 
SERIES HISTORY 
  • Thursday marks the sixth all-time meeting between ETSU and Elon with the Buccaneers leading the series, 4-1
  • The two teams met last season where ETSU won 77-64 in the opener of the Asheville Championship
  • Last year marked the first meeting since Feb. 7, 2005 when Elon won 80-72 in North Carolina
  • The Bucs won the first three games in the series starting with a 75-72 victory on Jan. 19, 2004 at Elon … The Bucs then won back-to-back home meetings on Feb. 14, 2004 (73-58) and Jan. 11, 2005 (79-67)

ETSU wraps up its two-game road swing Monday night when the Bucs travel to Indianapolis and take on Butler at 7 p.m. inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
