Strong Second Half Lifts ETSU to 72-56 win at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. (Nov. 19, 2023) – The ETSU women's basketball team used a strong second half effort to down Presbyterian on the road Sunday afternoon, 72-56. The victory extends ETSU's winning streak to three games and boosts its overall record to 3-1.

A trio of Buccaneers finished the day in double figures. Kendall Folley scored a team-high 17 points to go with eight rebounds, two steals and two assists. Nevaeh Brown added 16 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Journee McDaniel chipped in 11 points and four rebounds in her first start of the season. As a team, ETSU did a great job turning Presbyterian miscues into points as it scored 25 points off of turnovers on the day.

ETSU and Presbyterian jostled with the lead early on Sunday. With about three minutes to go in the first quarter, the Buccaneers went on a 9-3 run to build up a five-point advantage after one quarter of play, 19-14.

Facing a five-point deficit, Presbyterian's Bryanna Brady powered a comeback attempt for the Blue Hose. Brady outscored ETSU (12-9) by herself in the second quarter. Even with the offensive production from Brady, the Bucs were still tied at the half, 28-28.

The difference in Sunday's game came in the third quarter. ETSU scored the first 14 points in the second half and outscored the Blue Hose in the third quarter, 21-6. The Buccaneers, which held Presbyterian to 2-for-16 shooting from the field in the third quarter, had a balanced offense in the third with six points from Brown, five more from Breanne Beatty and Jakhyia Davis. With the offensive surge, the Buccaneers led by 15 points heading to the fourth quarter, 49-34.

After its offense was quieted in the third, Presbyterian bounced back in the final 10 minutes with 22 points. ETSU continued to shoot the ball well (54.5 percent) in the final frame to keep PC out of striking distance. The Bucs did not make a field goal in the final three minutes as PC attempted to extend the game by fouling. However, the Bucs made their free throws down the stretch (8-of-12 in the fourth quarter) to preserve the 72-56 win. Sunday's victory marks ETSU's first ever win over Presbyterian.

ETSU will return to action on Friday when it starts competing at Miam's Thanksgiving Tournament. The Bucs will take on Norfolk State at 1:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon before wrapping up the weekend with a game against either Colgate or Miami on Sunday.
