Women’s soccer hosts Wofford for Sunday SoCon clash

Buc look to add to SoCon contender resume against Terriers
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 7, 2023) The points are stacking up for the Buccaneers, and opportunity knocks for ETSU women's soccer in the final 14 days of the 2023 season. The second-place Buccaneers begin a stretch with three of four games at home against the Wofford Terriers on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

 ABOUT THE BUCS
·       ETSU comes into the match off a 1-0 win at The Citadel on Thursday. Capitalizing on a late red card, the Bucs leveraged a personnel advantage into a penalty kick for Ava Matherne, who scored her first collegiate goal.
·       Entering Sunday's action, ETSU is tied with Mercer and Samford in second place in the SoCon with a 3-1-1 record and 10 points. All three teams are two points back of Western Carolina at the top of the standings through five games.
·       With Matherne's goal on Thursday, five freshmen have found the net for the Bucs so far this season. Reagan Fitzgerald leads with four goals this season, while Ruby Teixeira, Molly Cason and Ella Parker have one each.
·       ETSU is one of the stingiest teams in the country. The Bucs rank fifth in the nation in goals against average (0.385) and have already set the program record for team shutouts in a season with 10. Ashton Blair needs one more shutout to tie the ETSU single season record with seven, set by Shu Ohba in 2021. Blair is 19th in the nation in goals against average, 22nd in save percentage, and her six shutouts are tied for 25th most in the country.
·       With four matches remaining in the regular season, ETSU needs one win to set a new high-water mark for Jay Yelton's tenure at eight victories. The Bucs last reached eight wins in 2018, and last reached eight wins with a winning record in 2016 when they finished 13-6-2.

ABOUT WOFFORD
·       Wofford comes in hot on the heels of a dramatic 2-1 win over UNCG on Thursday. Ines Obradovac brought the Terriers level in the 82nd minute, and Saachi Bureau scored with 46 seconds left to lift the home side to the victory, snapping a three-game losing streak.
·       Obradovac paces the Terriers offensively. The sophomore transfer from Virginia Tech has enjoyed a breakout season with Wofford, scoring her fifth goal of the season on Thursday, all since September 8.
·       The Terriers have struggled with conceding goals, posting a 2.07 goals against average and a .594 save percentage, both of which rank last in the SoCon. Wofford is 329th out of 336 teams in Division I in save percentage.

SERIES HISTORY
·       This is the 20th meeting between ETSU and Wofford. The Terriers lead the all-time series 10-8-1, winning three of the last four.
·       The Buccaneers are 6-3-0 at home against the Terriers but have lost the last two by 1-0 decisions.
·       The Bucs' last win over Wofford came on October 1, 2021, in Spartanburg. Lindsey Cook drilled a free kick in the 77th minute to lift ETSU to a 1-0 win. The victory was ETSU's first conference road win since 2018 at the time.
·       ETSU last beat Wofford at home on September 23, 2018, when Sarah Connolly became the fourth Buccaneer in program history to score four times in a game en route to a 7-1 blasting of the Terriers.
