Bucs clinch second seed with 2-1 win over Catamounts

ETSU to host quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of SoCon Women's Soccer Championship

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct 22, 2023) - While the regular season title was beyond its reach, ETSU still made a statement in the regular season finale – this is a team more than capable of winning a championship.

Grace Eatz scored just before half time and Sinoxolo Cesane delivered a spectacular turning volley to push ETSU to a 2-1 win over Western Carolina on Sunday at Summers-Taylor Stadium. After being picked seventh in the preseason poll, the Bucs finished second in the regular season standings and have earned the right to host quarterfinal and semifinal games in the 2023 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship.

After the Catamounts (10-4-3, 7-2-0) dominated the first 15 minutes, the Buccaneers (10-2-5, 6-1-2) began to find their feet, and a set piece delivered the opener in the final seconds before halftime. Emma Arnold took a right-footed out swinging kick and found Eatz right outside the six-yard box. Eatz got a clean header down to it, and Leanne Trudel's parry rolled out to her right and took an ETSU bounce into the side netting for Eatz's fourth goal this season and the sixth of her career.

The Bucs put the game away in the 66th minute off another corner.

Ava Matherne's delivery curled out away from the box, where Arnold found it and headed it back toward the goal. Cesane chested the ball, turned, and fired it in an arc over a frozen Trudel for her sixth goal of the season and the eighth of her career.

WCU pulled one back on a Becca Campbell penalty kick in the 85th minute but never had a real opportunity to look for an equalizer. ETSU sealed the win to finish unbeaten at home (7-0-2) in the regular season for the first time since 2016.

ETSU outshot WCU 13-9, but the Catamounts had three shots on goal to the Bucs' two. There were six yellow cards issued, including four on WCU, doubling its total for the season to date.

The Bucs have earned a bye through the first round of the 2023 SoCon Women's Soccer Championship and await the winner of Tuesday's match between Mercer and The Citadel in the quarterfinals on Friday, October 27. ETSU and Western Carolina will each host two quarterfinals and a semifinal game, with the championship game played at the home field of the highest remaining seed on November 4 or 5.
