JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 13, 2023) – The ETSU volleyball team got back into the win column on Friday night as it swept Wofford in three sets (27-25, 26-24, 25-22) at Brooks Gym.
Stat Standouts – Brianna Cantrell paced ETSU with 11 kills in Friday's win to go with seven digs.
Isabelle Iosua added a career-high 10 kills of her own on a hitting percentage of .474. A key in the Buccaneer win was their work from the service line as the team collected a season-high 10 aces. Malgorazata Andersohn, who totaled 19 assists and 10 digs, led the charge with five aces, while
Alex Kreutzmann chipped in four and
Kanon Miyaki added another.
Set 1 – The opening set of Friday's match was a competitive back-and-forth one with 15 tied scores and the lead changed hands eight different times. Cantrell started fast with five kills on eight attempts, while Iosua and
Jenna Forster both added four kills to help fuel the Buccaneer offense. Andersohn also totaled four of her five aces in the opening frame. Even with the play of Cantrell, Iosua, Forster, Andersohn and the rest of the Bucs, Wofford briefly took a 25-24 lead. Cantrell, however, reeled off three straight kills to help ETSU overtake the Terriers, 27-25.
Set 2 – Wofford looked like it may have regained the momentum early in the second as it scored four of the first five points. Credit the Bucs as they battled back to tie the score at 10. No lead grew larger than four points for the rest of the frame. A big kill from
Whitley Rammel tied the score at 22. The scoreboard read 24-24 before a kill from Iosua and a block put up by
Abbey Thomas and
Amanda Lowe finished out the set victory for ETSU, 26-24.
Set 3 – After winning the first two sets, ETSU built one of the largest leads of the match (six points) to seize control in the third. A kill from Iosua had the score at 21-15 Bucs. However, a 3-0 spark from the Terriers quickly made it 21-18. A timeout from ETSU seemed to settle things down before a kill from Forster closed out the set and match, 25-22.
Next Up – The Buccaneers, now 2-16 overall and 2-5 in SoCon play, will return to action on Saturday when it welcomes The Citadel to Brooks Gym. At the time of this release, the Bulldogs are a perfect 18-0 overall and 6-0 in 2023. First serve between the Bucs and Bulldogs is set for 8 p.m.
