Javier Matos recently wrapped up his first season as an assistant coach with the Bucs. Matos was hired as the new assistant coach for ETSU men's tennis ahead of the 2024-25 academic year. Matos comes to Johnson City after spending the past four seasons playing for Presbyterian College. 

In his first season helping to guide the Bucs, ETSU captured a share of the SoCon Regular Season Championship and five different players earned All-SoCon honors. Furthermore, three different Bucs collected SoCon Player of the Week honors. 

Matos, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, earned All-Big South honors in all four years of his collegiate career. In 2024, he became the 23rd player in conference history to be a three-time All-Big South Doubles selection. Furthermore, he became the 15th player in league history to be a four-time All-Big South singles player as well. 

Matos earned multiple Big South Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors during his time at PC. He helped PC win both the Big South Regular Season and Tournament titles in 2023. He also was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete following the 2023 season. 

Prior to coming to Presbyterian, Matos reached an ITF Ranking of 297. He also had a UTR Rating of 11.84. Matos won an ITF singles tournament in Venezuela and picked up a pair of ITF doubles tournament wins in Venezuela and Dominican Republic. He was ranked No. 2 in Venezuela and won the 2020 Aguila Negra Open. Since the age of 12, he competed in state and national team events, which include the being selected to join the South American COSAT 12 & 16 national teams.
