Bucs’ season comes to an end in loss to Furman

Downing posts double-double in loss

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (March 6, 2025) – East Tennessee State University women's basketball fell short on Thursday, 64-58 to Furman, in the quarterfinals of the 2025 SoCon Championship.

Junior forward Meghan Downing led ETSU with a 16 point, ten rebound double double to go with five blocks. It was her third double-double of the season and her third career five-block game. Downing recorded at least one block in all but two games, and had seven games with four or five blocks.

The five swats on the day moved her to 117 career, third all-time in ETSU history, and capped off her single-season school record with 70. Downing is just 13 blocks away from the career school record and will have an opportunity to set it at the beginning of the 2025-26 season.

5th year guard Courtney Moore and senior guard Kendall Folley left it all on the floor in their final games in the Blue & Gold, as did senior guard Braylyn Milton and 5th year forward Isabella Hunt.

Moore scored 12 points on the day, moving her into 17th on the all-time program scoring list with 1,125. She finished her career with 216 made 3-pointers, the third most of any ETSU player ever. Folley added 15 points and six assists, tying her career high in the latter category.

Folley finished her three years at ETSU with 724 points and 278 rebounds. Milton, who spent just one year in Johnson City, had the best year of her career, averaging 11.5 points per game on 36% shooting from 3-point range. Hunt, who also spent just the final year of her career in Johnson City, drew 25 charges and shot 54.4% from the field.

ETSU opened the game with an 8-2 lead, but a subsequent scoring drought allowed the Paladins to take a 12-10 lead into the second quarter. The Bucs began hitting from deep in the second, as both sides traded buckets en route to a 30-30 halftime tie.

Furman's offense broke through in the third quarter, scoring 25 on 78% shooting from the field while scoring 18 points in the paint. Folley and Downing did their best to keep ETSU within reach, combining for 12 of the Bucs 18 points in the frame.

Ultimately, the hole proved to be too much to climb out of. Downing finished her stellar night, scoring five in the fourth, and Moore added five of her own, but the Bucs were unable to come up with key makes down the stretch, and fell, 64-58.

The loss eliminates ETSU from the SoCon Championship and marks the end of the 2024-25 season.
