Lance wins gold in 600m at Camel City Sprint Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Feb. 7, 2025) – Make it two-for-two for ETSU's Meg Lance in the 600m.

For the second time this season, Lance captured gold in the 600m as she took home the top spot in the event on Friday at the Camel City Sprint Invitational, held at JDL Fast Track.

Lance, who won her first collegiate gold in the event last month at the Finn Pincus Invitational, set a personal best tonight after recording a time of 1:38.10. Her previous best time in the 600m was 1:39.53, set last year on the same track.

ETSU finished first and third in the 600m on Friday as Izelle Kruger won bronze with personal best time of 1:42.51.

Staying on the track, freshman Micailah Cook continued to have a stellar rookie indoor campaign. Cook qualified for the finals in the 60m after turning in the third-fastest time in the prelims at 7.78. Cook ran faster in the finals where she placed fourth in 7.73. Shortly after that, Cook posted a podium finish in the 200m where she finished third in 25.32. Both of Cook's times in the 60m and 200m were personal bests.

In the field events, Frania Romero-Barba made it another podium finish in the pole vault. In all three meets this indoor season, Romero-Barba has won a medal as she registered her second straight silver-medal performance on Friday. Romero-Barba finished second after clearing 3.50m.

In the weight throw, Tyla Nicholson (14.26m), Emma Johnson (11.68m) and Lexi Carter (11.28m) all had personal best marks.

QUOTABLES
Below are quotes from Director of Cross Country/Track & Field George Watts.

Micailah Cook continues to make an impact each meet with some very fine performances today in the 60m and 200m dashes. She exceeded my expectations for the 60m with a big pb and her 200m time will put her neat the top of the conference list.

Congrats to Meg Lance on her win and personal best in the 600m run. Although, not a conference event, it is a good indicator of where I think she's at in the 800m.

Other good performances today include Izelle Kruger earning a podium finish in the 600m and Frania Romero-Barba finishing runner-up in the pole vault. Our young throwers continue to make progress as Tyla, Emma and Lexi all had bests in the weight throw today.

One area we need to do better in is the long and triple jumps. I expect to see some better performances tomorrow in the triple than what we had today in the long jump.

We aren't at full strength currently, so overall I'm pleased with the progress being made.
