Malik, Bressum lead Bucs in spring opener

Buccaneer duo finish tied for 10th at Battle at Briar’s Creek

JOHN'S ISLAND, S.C. (Feb. 4, 2025) – Buccaneer newcomers Yannick Malik and Kristian Bressum led the ETSU men's golf team in its spring opener as the final day of Battle at Briar's Creek concluded Tuesday at The Golf Club of Briar's Creek.

For the tournament, Malik and Bressum both finished tied for 10th at 4-under-par 212. Malik strung together three straight rounds below par as he went 71-71-70, while Bressum – who started with a 4-under 68 in Monday's opener – carded back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 to finish off play in South Carolina. Over the two-day, 54-hole tournament, Malik registered 12 birdies and 34 pars, while Bressum totaled 10 birdies and 38 pars. Bressum, who had a flawless opening round with four birdies and 14 pars, put together a strong finish in Tuesday's finale as he birdied the final three holes to get back to even-par for the round.

There was a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard as Elon's Garrett Risner, Clemson's Kian Rose and NC State's Michael Vick all finished at 7-under-par 209.

NC State won the team title as the Wolfpack beat out No. 35 and tournament host College of Charleston by six shots. The Wolfpack finished at 19-under-par 845, while the Cougars were runner-up at 13-under-par 851. West Virginia placed third at 11-under-par 853.

The Bucs finished seventh at 8-under-par 856. After a 2-over 290 in round two, which concluded earlier on Tuesday, the Blue & Gold shot 5-under 283 in the final round en route to just miss catching No. 37 Wake Forest, Clemson and Elon – who all finished tied for fourth at 10-under-par 854.

Freshman Gavin Tiernan and redshirt senior Ben Carberry both finished tied for 23rd at even-par 216. Tiernan led the Bucs in the final round at 3-under 69.

The Bucs will now have a month off before returning to competition as ETSU heads back to South Carolina for the Colleton River Collegiate, which will be played March 2-3 at the Dye Course at Colleton River Club.
