SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Sept. 21, 2024) – The ETSU men's golf team wrapped up opening round play at the Valero Texas Collegiate on Saturday from TPC San Antonio Oaks Course.
Led by
Yannick Malik and
Gavin Tiernan, the Bucs sit in 13th place after round one. Malik, a transfer from the University of Arizona and Tiernan are tied for 43rd at even-par 72. Malik finished the round on a positive note as he played the back nine at four-under, posting three straight birdies to finish the day. Tiernan registered two birdies, five pars and two bogeys on each side to finish with the 72.
As a group, ETSU finished at 3-over-par 291 on Saturday, while No. 8 Oklahoma holds the first-round lead at 20-under-par 268. The Sooners hold a five-shot advantage over No. 12 Ole Miss and an eight-shot lead over No. 1 and reigning national champion Auburn.
Individually, Oklahoma's Jase Summy is the 18-hole leader after firing a 10-under 62 to open a four-shot cushion on the field. Cohen Trolio (Ole Miss) and Josiah Gilbert (Auburn) are tied for second at 6-under 66.
ETSU's other two countable scores came from freshman
Charl Barnard (T50, +1) and senior
Kristian Bressum (T57, +2).
The Bucs will be grouped with UTSA and North Florida in Sunday's round, and tee off starting at 9 a.m. ET.
