Ege captures medalist honors at Wake Forest Invitational

Bucs edged out by No. 1 Auburn for team title

PINEHURST, N.C. (March 5, 2024) – Mats Ege is having himself quite the week!

A day after being one of 15 golfers named to the Haskins Award Spring Watch List, Ege captured his second tournament win of the season after claiming medalist honors at the Wake Forest Invitational from Pinehurst No. 2.

Ege began the day two shots off the lead but after carding a 2-under 70 on Tuesday, the Buccaneer All-American jumped to the top of the leaderboard and picked up his fourth career victory. Ege earned co-medalist honors with Auburn's Jackson Koivun at 1-under-par 209. The duo were the only two golfers in the 66-player field to finish below par for the tournament.

Ege caught fire early in the round.

After going par-bogey, Ege strung together three straight birdies, putting himself two-under for the round. Ege closed the front nine with four consecutive pars, but the Buccaneer went birdie hunting following the turn. Ege birdied No. 10 and No. 11 before giving one back on the par-4, 419-yard No. 12. Ege finished the last six holes with five pars and a bogey to finish with the 68, marking the 18th round he has shot under-par this season.

For the tournament, Ege led the field with 12 birdies and par-5 scoring (-4), while he played the par-4s at even-par.

As a team, the 15th-ranked Buccaneers went head-to-head with No. 1 Auburn before the Tigers edged out the Blue & Gold by one shot. Auburn shot 1-under 279 on Tuesday and finished at 12-over-par 852, while ETSU posted a final round score of 5-over 285 en route to ending the tournament at 13-over-par 853.

The Bucs, who have finished in the top-five in six of their seven tournaments this season, defeated the likes of Wake Forest (+17), Duke (+18), Clemson (+18), Northwestern (+22) and NC State (+27).

ETSU led the 12-team field with 44 birdies and two eagles for the tournament.

Algot Kleen, the co-36 hole leader, finished tied for fourth at 2-over-par 212 (71-68-73), while Remi Chartier tied for 22nd at 7-over-par 217 (73-71-73). Jenson Forrester also finished in the top-25 at 8-over-par 218 (75-72-71).

The Bucs are back on the course on Monday, March 18 when ETSU heads to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to defend its title at the General Hackler Championship.
