SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Feb. 29, 2024) – The ETSU women's basketball team battled but fell on the road on Thursday night by a score of 75-64. With Thursday's loss, the Bucs move to 18-10 overall and 7-6 in SoCon play.
For the fifth time this season, the Bucs had four players score in double figures. Neveah Brown paced the Buccaneer scorers with 13 points with fellow starters
Meghan Downing and
Courtney Moore not far behind with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Journee McDaniel provided an offensive spark off the bench for the Bucs scoring 11 points in just 14 minutes of action.
Wofford jumped out to a 5-0 lead on the Bucs to start Thursday's contest. The Terriers relied heavily on points from the free throw line in the first quarter as they went 10-for-12 from the line. Even with the free opportunities for Wofford to put more points on the board, the Bucs battled back and trailed by just two points, 18-16, heading to the second quarter.
Wofford would maintain the lead for the rest of the first half. The Bucs made it a one possession game on a couple of occasions before halftime. However, a 6-0 run by Wofford grew its lead to 10 with a little over a minute to go before the intermission. A pair of makes from
Brecken Snotherly and Moore in the final minute for the Bucs trimmed the Terrier lead back to single digits, 36-29, at the half.
After scoring 29 points in the first two quarters, the Buccaneer offense really started to click in the third quarter. A three-point play by Brown tied the score at 43-43 with a little under six minutes to play in the third. Overall, ETSU shot 10-for-17 in the third and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc to fuel a 25-point quarter. After tying the game, the Bucs briefly took the lead before Wofford took it back. A 3-pointer from Snotherly in the final minute of the third made it 56-54 Wofford heading to the fourth.
The Bucs hung around for most of the final quarter. A layup from Downing made the score 66-63 Wofford with 2:49 remaining. However, ETSU scored just one more point in the final two-plus minutes, while Wofford went 5-for-6 from the free throw line to finish off the win over the Bucs.
ETSU will close out its regular season on Saturday when it heads to Greenville, S.C. to take on Furman. The Bucs knocked off the Paladins earlier this season in Johnson City, 78-59. Tip-off between the Bucs and Paladins is set for 6 p.m.
