Buccaneer redshirt freshman fires 4-under 68
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (Feb. 11, 2024) – Highlighted by a 4-under 68, the ETSU men's golf team was led by redshirt freshman
Jenson Forrester in Sunday's opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic being played at Grand Reserve Golf Club.
Forrester, who carded his lowest collegiate round in relation to par, is tied for 12th through 18 holes of competition. The Buccaneer redshirt freshman started the day on the par-3, No. 6 and began the round with six straight pars before he birdied three of the next four holes to get the three-under. Following four consecutive pars, Forrester went birdie-bogey-birdie-par to finish the round with a 68.
The Bucs' other scores came from Matt Dodd-Berry (-2),
Mats Ege (-2) and reigning tournament champion
Algot Kleen (-1). Dodd-Berry and Ege are tied for 35th and Kleen is tied for 46th.
As a team, the ninth-ranked Bucs are in sixth place at 9-under-par 279.
No. 30 North Florida holds the first-round lead at 17-under-par 271, while No. 6 Tennessee is one shot back at 16-under-par 272 and Iowa is in third place at 14-under-par 274. No. 43 Georgia (-13) and back-to-back defending champion Oklahoma (-12) round out the top five teams.
Iowa's Noah Kent went low on Sunday with a 9-under 63 to hold a three-shot lead over a group of three golfers who are at 6-under 66.
Second round play gets underway Monday morning with a shotgun start beginning at 7:30 a.m. ET. The Bucs will be grouped with Georgia and Oklahoma.
